SPORT AND CITIZENSHIP PLAY-IT

I would like to thank all of you, pupils and teachers, for using this educational resource that we have prepared with such excitement from FC Barcelona.

Sport is a fascinating world in which the Barcelona Football Club, due to its history and thanks to the support of thousands of members and followers, has achieved general recognition. And although this is important, I consider even more characteristic of our institution its strong civic implication. Now, from the Fundació FC Barcelona we would like to channel in a systematic and organised manner the club's potential of civic service and apply it to solidarity programmes in order to contribute to the society's cultural and civic development.

One of the Foundation's lines of works is that included under the title "Sport and Citizenship" and which also includes this pedagogical resource which we have named "play-it".

With “Sport and Citizenship” we wish to transfer to the society everything we learn in our day to day from all the sport sections and categories within our club: if we practice sport correctly, it contributes to people's development and teaches us to relate better with others. When we refer to being sporty, after all, we are referring to values, attitudes and behaviours which may be perfectly transferred to all people's day to day life.

Whether if we practiced sport or not, these sportsmanship values may be applied at home with our family, at school with colleagues and teachers and in the neighbourhood or city with our neighbours. These values can make us be happier, better persons and better citizens.

Sport teaches us the value of effort, perseverance and self-confidence; it educates us in the respect and politeness and accustoms us to act with equity and honesty. Being sporty also means team working and acting with total responsibility and commitment in collective projects. And Sport has finally become a common reference for a diversity of people and cultures, and as such, it can be an element to encourage fellowship, equality and justice which overcomes differences and brakes prejudices and stereotypes.

For the club and the Foundation which I preside over it is a major privilege to contribute for this message of "being sporty" to reach the classrooms of schools in so many countries worldwide.
We wish you find Play-it enjoyable and of great use for all the educational community.
